Vendor Shell Games

This week I attended Oracle’s MBX Conference (Modern Business Experience). For those who don’t know, I’m a Technical Architect/Sr. Technical Consultant by trade. The conference focused on how Oracle software products solve enterprise business needs to increase productivity/efficiency and, ultimately, profitability. At least that’s the official goal. But the real “business” happens after conference hours. Often, sales associates from all major vendors, partners, and even Oracle, fill potential clients with enough alcohol to give a horse liver failure. The hope behind this tactic is to make more sales.

The experience has me thinking about the way I operate BenzForce. It’s quite a contrast to MBX…I’m big on transparency, but sometimes that comes at a price. I am not about the quick sale (cash) and try to be there for people before and long after the sale.

I’m struggling to find new partners who will stand behind their products, deliver on their promises and stay consistent on their prices. In a nutshell I would like to find partners that conduct their business with a similar mindset as me. Please don’t get me wrong, I am not even close to being perfect, but I do my best.

Weeks ago, I secured an agreement to have a firm CNC om606 exhaust oval transitions from mild steel for a specific price. I paid up front and several weeks went by. Then, I was notified that the price would need to be adjusted upward by 250% of the original quote! I couldn’t believe the magnitude of the difference in quotes, and I was shocked by how long it took to be notified of the change in price. It ended up being a total waste of time and money. The rods, pistons, laser-cut parts, etc. all seem to differ from the original specs. This has cost many thousands of dollars and left me with another “learning experience” I really didn’t need.

For those of you who want high-quality products, I hope you’ll understand what I’m dealing with and stick with me. I’m working hard to find the right path forward. It is absolutely a journey, albeit an uphill one, but we WILL get there. Om606 rods and ovals are now in manufacturing (finally). However, there are several other efforts in limbo.

Thanks for the ear,

Rodney
